Levin Gjernals
Centrering
Ash, iron
The work Centrering takes as its starting point the book Wie erlangt man Erkenntnisse der höheren Welten? (Knowledge of the Higher Worlds and Its Attainment) from 1904 – 5 by Austrian thinker and founder of anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925). Steiner here describes how humans have the possibility of attaining higher worldly wisdom through meditation and may thereby contribute to the liberation of not only the individual, but of everything living. Levin Gjernals works with thoroughgoing examinations, particularly of nature’s most fundamental materials such as wood and clay. The works unfold through a scientific and philosophical approach to the material itself as well as to cultural history and anthroposophy. Hence, the turning of the ash wood in Centrering may be understood as a kind of translation of the thinking encountered in Steiner’s book — a translation Levin has created in a material interplay with the wood.
