Half Note Rest
Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen programme for art in public space at Odense Concert Hall.
Odense Concert Hall and Funen Art Academy welcome you to the opening of the exhibition Half Note Rest, in which nine artists from Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen programme for art in public space are exhibiting works created specifically for Odense Concert Hall.
Over the course of ten months, the artists have studied the building’s distinctive architecture, observed it in its everyday life and engaged in dialogue with its users. In this way, they have gained insight into the building’s diverse functions: as a venue for symphonic concerts, as conference rooms, as a general workplace and as a cultural meeting place.
In their works, the artists engage with the building as a dual-natured space, divided into front stage and backstage, where it is either quiet or full of sound, almost empty or packed with guests. This duality is also evident in the architecture, in the relationship between the hard, labyrinthine brutalism and the soft symphonic music that seeps through the walls from corridors, rehearsal rooms and concert halls.
The tension between hard and soft, activity and pause has become a recurring theme in the artists’ work and is emphasised in the exhibition title Half Note Rest. The term comes from musical notation and denotes a two-beat pause in a score; a chance to breathe between two notes, a small, airy interval in an otherwise tightly structured composition.
The exhibition is open to all for the opening on 22 May and during guided tours on the specified dates.
The exhibiting artists are: Alma Ulrikke Bille Stræde, Flora Aussant, Klau Skuza, Laura Guiseppi, Line Lyhne, Maria Gondek, Niklas Gjersøe, Paula, Petra Dalström
