Lotte Rose Kjær Skau, ’Her broad shoulders (Wide format)’
Beech trunk, table top with sunken sink
2025

You can’t use the sink in the middle of the kitchen counter for anything: it’s not connected. In general, it will be difficult to cook at that kitchen island. The stubs surrounding the countertop are not easy to sit on either, they are busy holding the counter in check. The artwork ‘Her broad shoulders (Broad format)’ borrows its title from the name of a mountain in Iceland, and is both an optical illusion and a mischievous rejection of utility. The eye and brain are capable of piecing it all together into a whole, decode that a counter and some stubs and a sink equal a kitchen island, but in reality? In reality, the sculpture rejects being put into use that easily. It looks capable, functional, but the objects have been taken out of their usual context, freed from functional demands. Set free to rest and stretch out. She—if one may address a sculpture in this way—is heavy. She can carry lots of things, but you can’t knock her over. Let her rest for a moment. Let her sprawl out.
