3rd year 2016
Funen Art Academy
Third year exhibition 2016
So this is what you look like from inside
12 – 20 May 2016
Opening Wednesday, 11 May, 17:00 – 21:00
Rådhushallen at Odense City Hall, Flakhaven 2, 5000 Odense C.
»So this is what you look like from inside« is a statement of fact as well as an expression of surprise; as if suddenly comprehending something previously incomprehensible, as if finally understanding what someone or something is made of—infrastructure, anatomy, characteristics, capacity. It is simultaneously a distancing and a positioning.
This year’s third year exhibition is not a siege of the innermost spaces of the public machinery, but a visit and a friendly dialogue. The exhibition is in this context a communicative gesture; the works are spotlights on the ornamented walls, the beautiful ceiling vaults, the marble floor.
Even though the artist’s move towards the centre of society began several decades ago, an internal position is still problematic. How does one maintain a critical and independent ideal practice when immersed in the workings of society? The location of this year’s third year exhibition at the city hall also points to a discussion of the artist’s role today; a discussion which is unsurprisingly pressing in an educational context.
Welcome to Funen Art Academy’s third year exhibition 2016, where 13 students show new works in Rådhushallen at Odense City Hall.
Through sound, video, performance, drawing, sculpture and installation, the exhibition revolves around topics such as economics, such as navigating within a present that seems chaotic, such as achievement, crisis and future. Gathered in one room, the works both stand apart and stand together, and thereby also demonstrate the collective aspect of artistic practice—and this site-specificity, based on the architecture and function of the city hall, is incorporated in several of the works as well as the catalogue, which will be available in the exhibition.
