Funen Art Academy and Tarup-Davinde welcome you to the Tower That Used to Be a Well, presenting seven new site-specific artworks displayed throughout the summer in the distinctive gravel pit landscape of Tarup-Davinde, on Funen.

Over 10 months, seven artists enrolled in the Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen programme for art in public space, have studied the area’s complex makeup of geology, industry, biodiversity, and community life. Based on these investigations, they have created unique works that explore the site’s multifaceted character. How can one begin to understand an ice age landscape reshaped by heavy industry, and later evolved into a biodiverse recreational area? In this scenic terrain, culture and nature are intricately interwoven. Approaching the site from different perspectives, the artworks raise questions, establish connections, and propose new readings of the site. Some works explore the mechanisms of the gravel extraction or the interactions between species. Others are formed by the environment or camouflage themselves within it. And then there are works that offer themselves to those who might need them – humans as well as animals.

On this occasion, the public is invited to the inauguration of the artworks on Thursday, June 19th at 5 – 7.30 PM in Tarup-Davinde at Det Fælles Mødested, where drinks and wood-fired pizzas will be served. John Juul Henriksen from Tarup-Davinde, and the lecturers from at Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen programme for art in public space, Francesca Astesani, curator and Marie Lund, will introduce the project and the artist will be present. Parking at Rolighedsvej 25, 5792 Årslev.

Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen’s programme for art in public space is a one-year postgraduate, continuing education programme at Funen Art Academy, critically exploring and unfolding the potential of art in public space.
